Our Approach to Osteopathic Treatment

At Balance-Rite Osteopathy Clinic we assess and treat using the whole body, Classical Osteopathic Approach, sometimes called ‘The Body Adjustment’. We use this method because the human musculo-skeletal framework is made up of hundreds of separate parts (bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, nerves, blood vessels) which all need to be working together as one whole unit, for optimum functioning of the body as a whole. When one of these parts of the whole is not working properly, it places extra work on other areas, causing those parts to become strained and also work less efficiently – which places another area under strain- and so it goes on throughout the body parts, so that the whole becomes affected and the strain becomes too much, causing you pain and immobility.

With an understanding of how other areas of the body become involved and strained, it makes little sense to treat just the local painful symptomatic area in isolation with the ‘quick-fix’ method, adopted by so many other therapists. Instead, treatment involves the use of your limbs (arms and legs) as long levers to restore mobility and function to the whole spine and pelvis, as well as to integrate the separate parts of the body with each other. You need to be very relaxed during treatment as it is a passive approach, where your osteopath will move your arms and legs within their normal range of movements. This is to ensure improved functioning of the body as a whole mechanical unit. At each treatment session the whole body will be treated in this way, unless there is a reason not to – in which case this will be discussed with you.

At Balance-Rite Osteopathy Clinic, we have been studying the beneficial effects of treating the whole body with classical osteopathy for over 15 years and the benefits can be seen in the many written testimonials from our patients. Our approach to diagnosis and treatment is very different from many  other osteopaths, physiotherapists and chiropractors, with patients often finding it very gentle and relaxing.  It can be tailored to the individual patient’s age, medical conditions and personal requirements, making it suitable for everyone from babies through to senior citizens.

At Balance-Rite Osteopathy we work in partnership with our patients, gaining feedback at all times during the treatment process, to ensure your comfort at all times.  You are provided with all the necessary information and any risks that may apply to you, to allow you to make an informed choice of how your treatment plan will progress.

For treatment, if it would make you feel more comfortable, you may wear loose fitting shorts, light-weight track suit bottoms or stretchy leggings, unless the osteopath feels that they would have a detrimental effect on the benefits of treatment in which case that will be explained to you. You are also welcome to bring along a chaperone if you feel you would like to have someone with you for the treatment (all children 16 & under must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian).
