This patient presented with right shoulder and neck pain, as well as a band of pain across her low back that extended into her buttocks and right leg. She had been injured in a car accident three and half years previously and had seen many therapists including other osteopaths and three different physiotherapists, in the surrounding local areas. By one physiotherapist she was told it was all in her mind and she needed to “close her pain gate” which he showed her how to do by closing his hands together. In the left photograph, you can clearly see how her mechanical framework had been left after treatment from more than three other therapists, over a three and a half year period.  In the right photo, you can see how her whole body was correctly adjusted at Balance-Rite Osteopathy Clinic, after only two months and eight treatment sessions. Continue reading to see how differently she was assessed, diagnosed and treated at Balance-Rite Osteopathy Clinic AND it wasn’t  “all in her mind!”

After a full assessment at Balance-Rite Osteopathy Clinic the following mechanical dysfunctions were found:

  • The right shoulder is held higher than the left
  • The shoulder girdle is rotated forward on the right.
  • The neck and head is rotated to the left because of the shoulder girdle (red line not passing centrally through the head)
  • The spine from the middle of the back up to the neck is side-bent left (red line not passing centrally through the spine and curve of waist not so evident on the right)

When you consider the position in which her body is being held from a global and macroscopic view as occurs at our clinic, it is clear to see why this patient is suffering from right sided neck, shoulder and lower back pain. Isolated and localised work to the painful areas of the shoulder, neck and low back only, as carried out by other therapists previously, were not effective or long-lasting because the whole musculo-skeletal body mechanics were not treated and corrected.

Treatment
As you can see in the ‘before and after treatment’ photographs on the right, once the underlying mechanical issues of the whole framework were properly corrected, the musculo-skeletal body framework is now balanced, with the red line running more centrally through the spine and head, with the musculature balanced on each side.

As you can see from the dates of treatment in the photographs, the correction of the whole body mechanics took only two months of intensive treatment, however, at the hands of other therapists this patient had been suffering for three and a half years, before being told “it was all in her mind!” She now attends our clinic on a maintenance basis only, to ensure that her musculo-skeletal framework is kept balanced and she is pain free.
