Many patients that attend our clinic are always surprised to see the video playing in the waiting room that shows the treatment of a three year old girl. They are amazed that children need treatment at all, after all they are not old and degenerating! However, the child’s framework is no different from adults in that it needs to distribute the forces placed throughout it efficiently and if it cannot do that, strain and injury to tissues can result. They also have the added mechanical strains that can be caused whilst they are ‘growing’ throughout their childhood and into their adult skeleton – these growing phases often disrupting their mechanical framework.

We often see children who have been investigated thoroughly, without any apparent underlying cause for their symptoms. One such case was that of an eleven year old boy suffering with ankle pain. In these before and after treatment images, you can visibly see why he was suffering pain!
You can read the full case study on this patient here
It is amazing when you consider the forces placed through the spine & pelvis during sporting activities, such as shown during the bowling action in these photos. Repetitive, asymmetrical movements of joints and parts of the body can lead to strain and injury in children as well as adults. In children, this mechanical strain is often overlooked and not correctly diagnosed, when medical testing (x-rays/Mri scans etc.) comes back with ‘all-clear’; frequently resulting in a diagnosis of ‘growing pains’ and they will ‘grow out of it’.
Many children continue to suffer unnecessarily because they have not been assessed using the ‘Balance-Rite’ approach! Many conditions suffered during adulthood are as a direct result of problems experienced and not resolved during childhood development. With treatment to correctly adjustment their framework as they develop, problems in later life can be avoided! Any child experiencing pain should be assessed, especially those involved in an above average amount of sporting activity.
It’s been a very busy first week of Posturary! With plenty of activity on our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/chertseyosteo so if you haven’t joined us head there now to keep up with the action. We’ll be posting plenty of self-help advice, articles and videos and hopefully injecting some humour into this otherwise rather dull subject!
‘Sit-Up’ to take the Posturary Challenge! February is here & it’s usually about now that those New Year resolutions begin to wane! For this Challenge you don’t have to find time…just do it every time you sit… & strengthen those under used back muscles! Good luck & ‘SIT-UP!’

This months life-changing story is of a 64yr old patient that had been suffering with chronic low back pain for 6 months, following a total right hip replacement in April 2015. She limped into clinic three days before Christmas, helped by her daughter, who assisted with removing her shoes and helping her move around the room and on the treating table. She was unable to stand or walk for longer than 5 minutes without experiencing acute low back pain that stopped her in her tracks. A keen walker prior to her hip deterioration, she had expected to be given a new lease of life following her hip replacement, instead in agony she had received physiotherapy for one month with exercises to do at home (some of which she was unable to do because of pain) and a course of hydrotherapy. With her symptoms of pain getting increasingly worse her consultant, happy with her hip, referred her to see a different consultant for her back, who had advised further physiotherapy and Mri scans to be carried out. It was necessary for her hip to be replaced with a larger one than her own, which resulted in a leg length discrepancy of between 1cm and 2.5cm dependent on who she spoke to!
After her first treatment in our clinic she felt no pain for three days. Due to Christmas it was 3 weeks before she came for treatment again, but she was able to walk & stand for 10 minutes now. After her 2nd treatment she was able to walk much easier and after her 3rd walked for over two hours without pain in one day, suffered aching muscles the next from all that walking, but did a further 1/2hr walking the following day without any pain! Her back pain had resolved and not returned by her 5th session and she had been able to walk again for over 2hrs over the weekend. She reported feeling so much more comfortable in her whole body, and was now able to put her own shoes on without a problem! Amazed at having recovered in only 5 treatment sessions, 4 of those over a period of only two weeks, she laughed on receiving her appointment for her scan, due next week!
Balance-Rite Osteopathy Clinic, Christmas Closure.
We wanted to make everybody aware this year of our opening times over the Christmas period. In previous years we have had phone calls from patients in desperation and agony on Christmas eve and even on Christmas and Boxing day. They had done nothing more trivial than to bend and pick up some discarded wrapping paper, or even something as ‘sinister’ as taking the turkey out of the oven and ‘thwack’ couldn’t move to stand up!!
So if you’re having any niggles at the moment don’t ignore them in all the Christmas bustle, it could just ruin your Christmas & New Year Festivities.
Call for your pre-christmas appointment now on 01932 988684.
The clinic will be closed from Thursday 24th December 2015 until Monday 4th January 2016, with one exception: Mark will be available for patients on Tuesday 29th December 2015 from 9.15am to 1.15pm.
Normal working hours will resume on Tuesday the 5th January 2016
We would like to take this opportunity to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy 2016.
Mark and Karen Brewer

Our treatment approach makes a REAL DIFFERENCE!
The left photo shows this patient at discharge from her consultant. The right photo shows the improvement achieved at our clinic, since her discharge.
“18 months after the fracture occurred is the healing period, your daughter will gain no further movement in her elbow after this” the orthopaedic consultant informed, the 10yr old child’s mother. She asked the consultant if there was treatment she could get privately any where and was told no, there was not. However, at Balance-Rite Osteopathy Clinic, there was something else she could have tried….and the impressive results achieved here, could have been even better, had she been referred much earlier within that 18 month period!
