This months life-changing story is of a 64yr old patient that had been suffering with chronic low back pain for 6 months, following a total right hip replacement in April 2015. She limped into clinic three days before Christmas, helped by her daughter, who assisted with removing her shoes and helping her move around the room and on the treating table.  She was unable to stand or walk for longer than 5 minutes without experiencing acute low back pain that stopped her in her tracks. A keen walker prior to her hip deterioration, she had expected to be given a new lease of life following her hip replacement, instead in agony she had received physiotherapy for one month with exercises to do at home (some of which she was unable to do because of pain) and a course of hydrotherapy. With her symptoms of pain getting increasingly worse her consultant, happy with her hip, referred her to see a different consultant for her back, who had advised further physiotherapy and Mri scans to be carried out.  It was necessary for her hip to be replaced with a larger one than her own, which resulted in a leg length discrepancy of between 1cm and 2.5cm dependent on who she spoke to!

After her first treatment in our clinic she felt no pain for three days. Due to Christmas it was 3 weeks before she came for treatment again, but she was able to walk & stand for 10 minutes now. After her 2nd treatment she was able to walk much easier and after her 3rd walked for over two hours without pain in one day, suffered aching muscles the next from all that walking, but did a further 1/2hr walking the following day without any pain! Her back pain had resolved and not returned by her 5th session and she had been able to walk again for over 2hrs over the weekend.  She reported feeling so much more comfortable in her whole body, and was now able to put her own shoes on without a problem! Amazed at having recovered in only 5 treatment sessions, 4 of those over a period of only two weeks, she laughed on receiving her appointment for her scan, due next week!

This eleven year old boy was brought into clinic by his parents for a check of his spine because of a family history of scoliosis. Viewing his back in a standing posture the evidence of scoliosis was not yet marked and therefore not easy to be picked up by his parents. However, clinical testing showed the presence of a left sided ‘rib-hump’ with an associated bending of the spine. This can be clearly seen in the left photograph, before treatment started, where the red line does not sit level across the entire rib cage and the left ribs rise up on that side, with the spine bending over towards the right. Examination of this patient using our whole body approach, also revealed mechanical dysfunctions in his pelvis which would give an un-level base for the spine to sit on, as well as torsioning of the hips and legs, causing flattened arches in the feet. Continue reading to see how our whole body treatment helped reduce this scoliotic rib hump after six treatment sessions. Continue reading

This eleven year old boy had been suffering with right ankle pain during the day and at night, for 3 years before attending Balance-Rite Osteopathy Clinic. He was diagnosed by his Gp with ‘growing pains’ and four months before attending our clinic, was prescribed orthotics to put inside his shoes and trainers, to correct his dropped arches and flat feet. These did not help or improve his ankle pain.  After only one half-hour treatment at Balance-Rite Osteopathy Clinic, his symptom of pain had gone and one year on, still has not returned!  Continue reading to find out how our different approach to treatment eased his pain without the need for orthotics and why ‘growing pains’ should not be ignored. This child was suffering with low back pain, a keen cricket player at County level, complained of back pain after a particularly hard training session. After a thorough whole body assessment at Balance-Rite Osteopathy Clinic she was diagnosed with muscle strain, which was caused by dysfunctional mechanics in her pelvis and lumbar spine.  The misalignment is clearly seen in the left photograph before treatment, where the red central line starting between the middle of her feet, does not run centrally up through her spine and head and the pelvis is tilted upwards on the right. After treatment using our gentle, whole body approach, the photo on the right shows a now balanced and central pelvis able to support  a central spine and symmetrically balanced back muscles. This patient presented with a fifteen year history of repeated episodes of acute low back pain twice a year that left her bed-bound and in agony. Each episode was a similar story; she would bend to make a simple movement, such as to dry her legs after a shower or to pick her clothes up from the floor, and her back would go into spasm. Her relief was in the form of very strong painkillers or muscle relaxants and being unable to move, she would be off work for at least two weeks with the pain. Having sought repeated help from her doctor, she was referred for xrays which showed early degenerative changes in her mid-back (upper lumbar spine) and she was offered more pain killers. After another painful episode and two weeks off of work, she was recommended to come to Balance-Rite Osteopathy Clinic by another satisfied patient. This patient is a member in the crew of a Dragon Boat Racing Team that represents Great Britain, having won a gold medal at The World Club Crew Championship & silver and bronze at The European Championships in 2014. He was recommended to come for treatment at Balance-Rite Osteopathy Clinic by his coach because of low back pain, with very painful symptoms radiating into his right leg. He had seen both a chiropractor and a physiotherapist two weeks previously who had both made his symptoms much worse. Unfortunately they had only treated his local symptoms and the physiotherapist had manipulated his back causing the patient to experience an increase in pain at the time, making the patient very nervous at the prospect of further treatment. This patient presented with right shoulder and neck pain, as well as a band of pain across her low back that extended into her buttocks and right leg. She had been injured in a car accident three and half years previously and had seen many therapists including other osteopaths and three different physiotherapists, in the surrounding local areas. By one physiotherapist she was told it was all in her mind and she needed to “close her pain gate” which he showed her how to do by closing his hands together. In the left photograph, you can clearly see how her mechanical framework had been left after treatment from more than three other therapists, over a three and a half year period.  In the right photo, you can see how her whole body was correctly adjusted at Balance-Rite Osteopathy Clinic, after only two months and eight treatment sessions. Continue reading to see how differently she was assessed, diagnosed and treated at Balance-Rite Osteopathy Clinic AND it wasn’t  “all in her mind!” Continue reading

This patient called Balance-Rite Osteopathy Clinic in desperation, having experienced a sharp pain across his low back, with pain shooting into his legs, and he was  in agony. He was barely able to walk and had to be helped out of his car by his wife and helped into the clinic. He had made no particular bending or twisting movement to cause this pain, he was just walking up a few steps, but the sharp pain stopped him in his tracks. He had seen a different osteopath in Chertsey a few weeks previously for back and neck pain, but unable to get hold of them was very concerned, as he had never experienced pain like this before. At only 31 years old, he had suffered with low back pain, pain between his shoulders and neck pain, for many years with frequent episodes of pain. During such an episode, he had seen many different osteopaths and they would treat him with a combination of massage, manipulation and ultrasound, to the area where he felt his painful symptoms. This patient was suffering with low back pain, a keen health and fitness fanatic, she had seen her personal trainer a few days previously for a workout. She hadn’t felt any pain at the time but could now barely move properly.  In the photographs taken, before and after treatment, you can see how the muscle spasm in her mid & low back was causing her pelvis to be pulled over to the right. Her shoulders have compensated by moving over to the left. This patient was very surprised to see how her back had contorted, she felt as though she was standing perfectly straight! A very common compensation that occurs and a very painful and limiting one! Continue reading to find out how this lady was treated at Balance-Rite Osteopathy Clinic, Chertsey. Continue reading
