This patient presented with a fifteen year history of repeated episodes of acute low back pain twice a year that left her bed-bound and in agony. Each episode was a similar story; she would bend to make a simple movement, such as to dry her legs after a shower or to pick her clothes up from the floor, and her back would go into spasm. Her relief was in the form of very strong painkillers or muscle relaxants and being unable to move, she would be off work for at least two weeks with the pain. Having sought repeated help from her doctor, she was referred for xrays which showed early degenerative changes in her mid-back (upper lumbar spine) and she was offered more pain killers. After another painful episode and two weeks off of work, she was recommended to come to Balance-Rite Osteopathy Clinic by another satisfied patient. This patient called Balance-Rite Osteopathy Clinic in desperation, having experienced a sharp pain across his low back, with pain shooting into his legs, and he was  in agony. He was barely able to walk and had to be helped out of his car by his wife and helped into the clinic. He had made no particular bending or twisting movement to cause this pain, he was just walking up a few steps, but the sharp pain stopped him in his tracks. He had seen a different osteopath in Chertsey a few weeks previously for back and neck pain, but unable to get hold of them was very concerned, as he had never experienced pain like this before. At only 31 years old, he had suffered with low back pain, pain between his shoulders and neck pain, for many years with frequent episodes of pain. During such an episode, he had seen many different osteopaths and they would treat him with a combination of massage, manipulation and ultrasound, to the area where he felt his painful symptoms. This patient was suffering with low back pain, a keen health and fitness fanatic, she had seen her personal trainer a few days previously for a workout. She hadn’t felt any pain at the time but could now barely move properly.  In the photographs taken, before and after treatment, you can see how the muscle spasm in her mid & low back was causing her pelvis to be pulled over to the right. Her shoulders have compensated by moving over to the left. This patient was very surprised to see how her back had contorted, she felt as though she was standing perfectly straight! A very common compensation that occurs and a very painful and limiting one! Continue reading to find out how this lady was treated at Balance-Rite Osteopathy Clinic, Chertsey. Continue reading

This patient has been suffering with low back pain since his early thirties and had visited osteopaths in the past who would ‘crack it back into place’. Now aged thirty nine, he came to Balance-Rite Osteopathy Clinic in agony, this episode worse than any other episode he had experienced. As a self-employed carpenter he could not afford to be off work with back pain.  In the left photograph it is clear to see how his body has compensated with a very protective muscle spasm, by shifting his pelvis to the right and his shoulders in response, to the left. Continue reading for details of how this patient was assessed and treated with our whole body approach.
